In Croatia, colon cancer ranks second in frequency among both men and women.
What is colon cancer?
Before we find out when the right time to visit a doctor is, it is important to understand what colon cancer is. It is a malignant tumor that develops in the colon or rectum.
It can cause various symptoms, including changes in digestion, bleeding in the stool, and weight loss. Early detection is key to increasing the chances of successful treatment.
When should you visit a doctor?
If you notice symptoms that may indicate colon cancer, contact your doctor.
In its very beginning, the disease appears as a polyp, which is most often benign, but it is very important to recognize precancerous polyps. A polyp most often appears without symptoms and is usually noticed accidentally during a colonoscopy examination. Larger polyps can cause symptoms similar to those of cancer and/or hemorrhoids.
In the early stage of the disease, there are no characteristic symptoms.
Warning signs may include:
- bleeding in the stool
- pain and cramping in the abdomen
- changes in digestion
- frequent diarrhea or constipation
- a constant feeling of fatigue
- sudden weight loss
- anemia
Also, if you have a family history of colon cancer or are over the age of 50, you should undergo regular preventive check-ups.
Prevention of colon cancer
There are steps we can take to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer:
- a healthy lifestyle
- a balanced diet rich in fiber
- reducing alcohol intake
- avoiding smoking

The above advice can help maintain colon health. Also, regularly undergoing colonoscopy can detect changes in the intestines.
Colon cancer is a disease that requires timely diagnosis and treatment.
