Why is the PAP test important for every woman?
What is a Pap test?
A Pap test is a simple and non-invasive medical examination in which cells are collected from the vagina, cervix, and cervical canal. The sample is then sent to a laboratory. With a Pap test, we can detect changes in cervical cells, HPV, and the development of cervical cancer in the earliest stages, when the chances of recovery are high.
When is a Pap test performed?
A Pap test is most commonly performed on the seventh day of the menstrual cycle, but it can also be taken in the middle of the menstrual cycle.
How to prepare for a Pap test?
Before the examination itself, it is necessary to empty the bladder. 24-48 hours before visiting the gynecologist, it is not recommended to:
- have sexual intercourse
- bathe
- use tampons
When should you have your first Pap test?
Every woman should have her first Pap test after becoming sexually active with a partner. Regular check-ups, if you are healthy, are sufficient once a year.
Regular Pap testing significantly affects the reduction in the number of women suffering from cervical cancer. If you go for check-ups regularly, cervical cancer can be detected at an early stage when the cure rate is very high.

A Pap test result can be positive or negative. It can happen that the test result is falsely positive or falsely negative. If there is suspicion regarding the test result, repeating the Pap test is recommended.
If abnormalities are found in the Pap test result, do not worry immediately because this does not necessarily indicate cervical cancer.
If the test results are poor, the gynecologist will refer you for additional examinations such as colposcopy and biopsy.
