When is the right time for a breast ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound is an important diagnostic examination that helps detect the first changes in breast tissue.
This non-invasive and safe examination uses sound waves to create images inside the breast, allowing doctors to identify potential problems in a timely manner.
When is the right time to have a breast ultrasound?
According to the recommendations of medical experts, after the age of 20, women should regularly perform a breast self-examination in order to detect any possible changes. Self-examination is performed once a month.
Up to the age of 40, a breast ultrasound is recommended once a year. An initial mammography (with tomosynthesis) is recommended at the age of 40, and further examinations should continue depending on the density of the glandular breast parenchyma and family history. Read more here about the guidelines for breast examination.
Recommended age for the first breast ultrasound
Having the first breast ultrasound is recommended around the age of 25 (for women with an average risk of developing breast cancer). For women with an increased risk of breast cancer, the first ultrasound is recommended even earlier. This makes it possible to create an initial image of the breasts that will serve as a reference point for future examinations.
How often should a breast ultrasound be performed?
The frequency of breast ultrasound depends on individual risk, age, and the doctor’s recommendations. In general, routine ultrasound monitoring may be annual or every two years, depending on the results of previous examinations and medical assessment. With regular ultrasound monitoring, any changes or abnormalities in the breasts can be quickly identified, providing peace of mind and security.
Breast ultrasound findings
The doctor will, upon completion of the examination, explain the findings, answer all your questions, and give a recommendation for the next examination.
There are situations in which the doctor will recommend additional breast ultrasound examinations. This may include cases when a woman feels a lump or any changes in the breasts, as well as if there are specific symptoms such as discharge or pain.
