How is a gastroscopy examination performed?
Gastroscopy is a diagnostic examination that enables the doctor to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
How is a gastroscopy examination performed?
An endoscope is a flexible instrument consisting of a very bendable and thin tube about 8 mm thick. It allows us to analyze the mucosa and detect pathological changes.
Why is gastroscopy needed?
Gastroscopy helps diagnose various diseases and conditions. It is also used to diagnose inflammatory changes in the lining of the esophagus, ulcers, or cancer.
How to prepare for gastroscopy?
For this examination to be performed properly, the stomach must be completely empty. Take all medications as usual, with a little water.
What does the examination look like?
Gastroscopy is a medical examination performed using a gastroscope, that is, a tube inserted through the mouth into the stomach and duodenum. It is used to detect potential problems such as ulcers, bleeding, tumors, and more.
Before the examination itself, the doctor will spray the throat with a local anesthetic to minimize sensation and reduce the gag reflex. The patient lies on their left side, and the examination itself usually takes a few minutes.
The doctor places a small tube in the patient’s mouth through which the endoscope is inserted. When the endoscope reaches the stomach, air is pumped in to straighten the stomach walls and obtain the best possible view. During the procedure itself, the doctor may also perform a stomach biopsy, if necessary.
After the examination, there may be a feeling of weakness and discomfort, but these sensations pass quickly.
Who is gastroscopy recommended for?
Gastroscopy is recommended when gastrointestinal tract disease is suspected, such as:
- vomiting or diarrhea that does not stop
- bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract
- abdominal pain
- difficulty swallowing
- bloating
- sudden weight loss
- anemia
- as well as a preventive examination for people who are prone to gastrointestinal tract diseases or have an increased risk of developing such diseases.
Gastroscopy is also recommended as a preventive examination for older adults, considering that more serious diseases of the esophagus and stomach can last for a longer period of time without significant symptoms.
