Degenerative joint diseases (arthrosis) – Polyclinic Drinković
About degenerative joint diseases
At Drinković Polyclinic in Zagreb, we provide diagnostics and treatment of degenerative joint diseases, with special emphasis on osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, and shoulder.
Osteoarthritis is the gradual wear of joint cartilage that leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It most commonly occurs after the age of 40, but it can also develop earlier, especially after injuries or with increased joint load.
Early recognition of changes is key to slowing the progression of the disease and preserving joint function.
Most common symptoms of osteoarthritis
- knee pain when walking or climbing stairs
- hip pain with a feeling of stiffness
- morning stiffness
- reduced range of motion
- swelling and a feeling of “grinding” in the joint
If the symptoms recur or worsen, an orthopedic examination is recommended.
Diagnosis of osteoarthritis
The assessment includes:
- specialist orthopedic examination
- X-ray imaging of the joint
- MRI diagnostics (if needed) to assess cartilage and subchondral changes
Integrated radiological diagnostics allow precise determination of the degree of damage and therapy planning.
Treatment of degenerative changes
The therapeutic approach is individually adapted to the stage of the disease and includes:
- conservative treatment
- targeted intra-articular therapies
- physical rehabilitation plan
- recommendation for surgery (when indicated)
The goal of treatment is to reduce pain, improve mobility, and delay or avoid surgery whenever possible.
