Perimenopause: when does it start and how to recognize the first signs?
Perimenopause is a transitional period that precedes menopause. During this period, a woman’s body begins to reduce the production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. The changes can be mild, but also very pronounced, depending on each woman’s body.
When does perimenopause begin?
It most often begins between the ages of 40 and 45, but it can also occur earlier. In some women, symptoms appear as early as the mid-thirties. The duration of perimenopause can vary, from several months to as long as ten years.
At the beginning, cycles may become shorter or longer. Changes in the duration of menstruation are the first sign that the body is entering a new phase.
First signs of perimenopause
The most common early signs include hot flashes, night sweats, and an irregular cycle. Many women notice mood changes, irritability, and reduced concentration.
Insomnia, vaginal dryness, and reduced libido may also occur. Fatigue and changes in body weight are common accompanying symptoms. All of these are consequences of the hormonal imbalance that occurs during this period.
How to ease the symptoms?
A healthy diet and regular exercise can significantly alleviate symptoms. It is recommended to consume foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and phytoestrogens. Soy, flax seeds, and legumes naturally support hormonal balance.
Avoid excessive consumption of coffee, alcohol, and cigarettes, as they can worsen hot flashes. Enough sleep and relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation help reduce stress and insomnia.

If the symptoms are very pronounced or affect quality of life, it is important to consult a doctor. A gynecologist may recommend hormone therapy or natural dietary supplements. Regular check-ups are key to monitoring hormonal health and preventing possible complications.
Perimenopause is a natural process that every woman experiences in her own way. By recognizing the first signs and taking care of health, it is possible to go through this period more calmly and with more energy.
