A neurolog performs a series of different tests and assessments to evaluate the functions of the patient’s nervous system.
Who should have a neurological examination?
A neurological examination should be performed by people who have difficulties with:
- frequent headaches and dizziness
- blurred vision
- chronic fatigue

What does a neurological examination look like?
The examination begins with an assessment of the patient’s mental status, that is, a conversation with the patient about their symptoms. This is followed by a motor assessment test, that is, coordination of movement.
The examination will also include the ability to sense touch, pain, and the recognition of spatial and visual information.
The neurologist will also examine the patient’s vision in order to determine any abnormalities in the visual field, visual acuity, or color. Hearing is also examined, as it is associated with balance problems.
The neurologist will then assess the patient’s speech and language, cognitive functions, and make an assessment of the autonomic nervous system.
At the end, a diagnosis and a treatment recommendation follow, if necessary.
How long does a neurological examination take?
A neurological examination takes 30–45 minutes.
