How to prepare for an EEG
EEG – Electroencephalography is a completely painless diagnostic examination. It is performed using small plates (electrodes) that are placed on the head. The electrodes record brain activity, which is then displayed on the screen in the form of wavy curves.
When is it necessary to have an EEG?
The examination is necessary for people who suffer from:
- epilepsy,
- headaches, dizziness, and migraines,
- sleep disorders,
- brain dysfunctions of various causes,
- inflammatory diseases (encephalitis),
- stroke,
- dementia,
- brain injury,
- brain tumors,
- memory loss.
How long does the examination take?
A standard EEG lasts about 20 minutes to half an hour, and an EEG after a sleepless night (EEG NNN) about one and a half hours.
How to prepare for an EEG?
Preparation for a standard EEG
- hair should be clean and dry,
- do not apply lotions, oils, or creams to the skin or hair,
- wear comfortable clothing that you can easily remove,
- all medications should be taken without skipping (except sleeping pills, sedatives, and muscle relaxants),
- immediately before the recording, it is necessary to eat a light meal.
Preparation for an EEG after sleep deprivation (after a sleepless night)
The preparation is the same as for a standard EEG, except for the rules regarding sleep. You come for the recording after a sleepless night, that is, you must not sleep for 6 hours before the examination. You may sleep during the recording. Avoid consuming caffeine several hours before the examination.
What does the examination look like?
The examination is performed in a sitting or lying position, with eyes closed, in a position that relaxes you. We will ask the patient to open and close their eyes.
EEG is a safe and painless method and can be repeated multiple times without consequences for the patient.
