What is a breast ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound is a medical examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of breast tissue. It is performed with a handheld device called a probe, which is placed on the skin of the breast. The probe sends high-frequency sound waves that bounce off the breast tissue and create echoes that are sent to a computer, producing a detailed image.
How to prepare for a breast ultrasound?
It is best to schedule a breast examination between the 5th and 10th day of the menstrual cycle. Bring all your previous findings so that the doctors can compare whether any changes have occurred. Also, bring a list of the medications you are taking. At least 24 hours before the examination, avoid using deodorant, antiperspirant, powder, lotion, creams, and perfume on the breasts or underarms, because if another examination such as mammography or magnetic resonance imaging is needed, metal particles may be visible on the images and may cause a diagnostic dilemma. How long does the examination take?
The examination is performed in a lying position, and it also includes an examination of the armpits, with the whole procedure usually lasting 20–30 minutes. The examination is performed by a radiologist.
