Spirometry
Spirometry literally means “measurement of breath” and represents the most common method for measuring lung function.
What is spirometry used for?
It is used to measure lung volume and function and to assess the rate of airflow in the lungs. With this examination, we determine the speed and volume of air during inhalation and exhalation.
When should spirometry be performed?
The indication for this examination is the diagnosis of patients with:
- asthma
- bronchitis
- pulmonary emphysema
- pulmonary fibrosis
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
It is also used as a forensic method for assessing lung damage in car accidents or workplace injuries, as well as for assessing the functional respiratory condition of athletes.
How is spirometry performed?
This examination may be more physically demanding for some patients, but it is not complicated and does not require special preparation. The examination itself does not take long and is completely painless.
Before spirometry, it is recommended to avoid smoking and, if possible, to refrain from using inhalation medications. It is advisable not to eat for 2 hours before the examination and to avoid strenuous exercise 30 minutes beforehand. The examination itself is performed by blowing all the air out of the lungs as quickly as possible.
What does this test show?
It shows us whether the patient has certain breathing difficulties and serves for measuring lung function, as well as for measuring lung volume.
The results of this examination are compared with reference values, and we advise you on further examinations and therapy.
