Cervical cancer prevention

Prevention of cervical cancer is based on timely gynecological examinations, cytological tests, and HPV prevention. It is one of the few malignant tumors for which it is possible to prevent the development of the disease or detect it at a very early, completely curable stage.

Why is cervical cancer prevention important?

Cervical carcinoma most often develops as a result of a long-term infection with high-risk types of the HPV virus. The process of transition from healthy mucosa to precancerous changes, and then to carcinoma, takes years, which allows for timely detection and prevention of the disease.

Regular examinations significantly reduce the risk of developing invasive carcinoma.

Gynecological examination

Gynecological examination is the basis of every preventive assessment. It enables visual and clinical evaluation of the cervix, vagina, and surrounding structures, as well as recognition of changes that require additional diagnostics.

It is recommended:

• regularly, even without symptoms
• especially for sexually active women

Pap test (standard and LBC)

The Pap test is the basic method for early detection of precancerous and early malignant changes of the cervix.

At Drinković Polyclinic, the following are available:

• standard Pap test
• liquid-based cytology (LBC – Liquid Based Cytology)

The LBC method enables better sample quality and greater diagnostic reliability compared to the conventional Pap test.

HPV testing

HPV testing enables detection of high-risk types of human papillomavirus that are directly associated with the development of cervical carcinoma.

The HPV test is used:

• as part of a preventive examination
• in cases of an abnormal Pap test
• for monitoring women at increased risk

A positive HPV test does not mean carcinoma, but it indicates the need for enhanced monitoring.

HPV vaccination

Vaccination against the HPV virus is one of the most effective measures for preventing cervical cancer. The vaccine protects against the most common high-risk HPV types responsible for the majority of cervical carcinoma cases.

Vaccination is recommended for:

• girls before the start of sexual activity
• young women
• and women who have not yet encountered certain types of HPV

Vaccination does not replace regular gynecological examinations, but complements them.

• women without symptoms
• women with irregular gynecological examinations
• women with a positive HPV finding
• women with an abnormal Pap test
• women who want to actively take care of their reproductive health
