Hypothyroidism – symptoms and treatment
Hypothyroidism occurs as a result of reduced secretion and action of thyroid hormones. It most commonly occurs in older people and is somewhat more common in women.
Causes of hypothyroidism
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
The exact cause of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is not known, but some of the assumptions include: stress, low birth weight, infections, various medications, and toxins.
Other causes of hypothyroidism are:
- autoimmune diseases
- certain medications
- thyroid surgery
- radiotherapy
Symptoms of hypothyroidism
Symptoms are very difficult to notice at the very beginning of the disease. Consult your doctor if you notice symptoms such as:
- fatigue
- depression
- constipation
- very dry skin
- sudden weight gain
- elevated blood cholesterol levels
If you suspect thyroid disease, contact a doctor as soon as possible because neglecting the symptoms and inadequate treatment of hypothyroidism can cause serious problems.
Diagnosis of the disorder
More severe forms of hypothyroidism are easily identified based on pronounced symptoms and by determining TSH, T3, and T4 from a blood test, as well as by thyroid ultrasound, which shows its appearance and size.
In Croatian maternity hospitals, newborn babies are screened for congenital hypothyroidism, and if it is present, treatment is started immediately.
Treatment of hypothyroidism
This condition is treated with replacement therapy, that is, medications containing the missing thyroid hormones. The doctor will guide you through the entire process and adjust your therapy until the right dosage is reached. After that, check-ups once a year are sufficient.
Therapy for hypothyroidism is taken throughout life.
