What is the FeNO test?

FeNO test or the exhaled nitric oxide test is used in patients with allergic asthma. With this test, we determine the degree of inflammatory changes and select medications that suppress inflammation.

What is nitric oxide?

Nitric oxide is a gas produced by cells involved in inflammation associated with allergic or eosinophilic asthma.

How is nitric oxide measured?

The FeNO test stands for fractional exhaled nitric oxide concentration. The nitric oxide test is measured by having you blow slowly and evenly.

Why is nitric oxide measured?

It is measured to see whether you have the typical inflammation associated with allergic asthma. The measurement is then repeated at a follow-up examination to check whether the medicines you are using are reducing the level of nitric oxide and thus keeping the inflammation under control. A doctor may use the data from FeNO testing together with spirometry and other lung function tests to adjust your medications and thus keep your asthma under control. Successful control of your asthma depends on a partnership between you and your allergist.
