ABUS – Automated Breast Ultrasound (3D)
ABUS Zagreb – Automated breast ultrasound (3D)
ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound System) is an advanced automated method of 3D breast ultrasound diagnostics, especially intended for women with dense breasts, in whom mammography has reduced sensitivity. At Drinković Polyclinic, ABUS is used as a standard supplement to mammography during screening in women with dense glandular tissue.
What is ABUS?
ABUS is an automated breast ultrasound that scans the entire breast in a 3D view, independently of the operator. It enables precise detection of early changes, breast cancer, and architectural distortions, especially in women with ACR C and D breast types.
Why is ABUS important for dense breasts?
Dense glandular tissue can “hide” cancer on a mammogram. ABUS:
- increases detection sensitivity
- provides a more detailed 3D view of the breast
- enables standardized and repeatable analysis
Advantages of the ABUS examination
- 3D view of the entire breast
- No radiation
- Quick and painless examination (10–15 min)
- Ideal supplement to mammography
- Better cancer detection in dense breasts
Who is ABUS especially recommended for?
- women with dense breasts (ACR C and D)
- as a supplement to mammography
- women with an increased risk of breast cancer
- in preventive and routine check-ups
- for monitoring benign breast changes
ABUS or classic breast ultrasound?
ABUS does not replace classic ultrasound, but rather complements it:
- ABUS scans the entire breast automatically
- enables subsequent analysis and comparison
- it is especially useful for screening
What does an ABUS examination look like?
The patient lies on her back. The device automatically scans the breast in several standard projections. There is no pain, no radiation, and no special preparation is required.
Is ABUS safe?
Yes. ABUS is completely safe and does not use ionizing radiation.
Can ABUS replace mammography?
No. ABUS is a supplement to mammography, especially in dense breasts.
How long does an ABUS examination take?
On average 10–15 minutes.
Is special preparation needed?
No, no special preparation is required.
ABUS is one of the most modern methods of early breast cancer detection in women with dense breasts. In combination with mammography and classic ultrasound, it provides the highest level of diagnostic confidence.
