HPV testing

HPV testing is a key preventive gynecological examination used to detect the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV), including high-risk types associated with the development of cervical cancer. What is HPV and why testing is important

• HPV is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection
• certain types (e.g. 16 and 18) carry a high oncological risk
• the infection is often without symptoms
• The HPV test detects the virus before changes appear on the PAP test
• it enables timely monitoring and prevention of cervical cancer

What the HPV test detects

• the presence of high-risk HPV types
• the possibility of genotyping (depending on the test)
• assessment of the risk for the development of cervical intraepithelial lesions

When HPV testing is recommended

• in case of an abnormal PAP result
• as part of screening for women over 30 years of age

HPV test and PAP test – difference

• HPV test: detects the cause (virus)
• PAP test: detects cellular changes
• together they make up the most reliable screening (co-testing)
