Preparation, safety and limitations – Drinković Polyclinic

X-ray imaging (RTG) is a fast and widely available diagnostic method that uses a low dose of ionizing radiation. Most X-ray examinations do not require special preparation, but for certain exams specific instructions are needed for the quality of the findings and patient safety.

GENERAL RULES FOR X-RAY EXAMINATIONS

  • You should arrive 10 minutes earlier for the examination
  • Bring previous medical documentation and images if available
  • Do not discontinue therapy, unless stated otherwise
  • Before imaging, remove metal objects from the area being examined

PREGNANCY AND X-RAY

  • As a rule, X-ray examinations are not performed during pregnancy
  • If there is a possibility of pregnancy, it is mandatory to emphasize this before imaging
  • In urgent and justified cases, the examination may be performed with protective measures

X-RAY EXAMINATIONS WITHOUT SPECIAL PREPARATION

The following X-ray examinations do not require any special preparation:

  • Bone X-ray
  • Foot or hand X-ray
  • Comparative X-ray imaging
  • Spine X-ray by segment
  • Functional spine X-ray imaging by segment
  • Whole spine X-ray
  • Sinus X-ray
  • Heart and lung X-ray

Therapy is taken as usual, diet is not restricted.

X-RAY EXAMINATIONS REQUIRING SPECIAL PREPARATION

Abdominal X-ray

  • A light diet the day before is recommended
  • Avoid carbonated drinks and heavy food
  • If possible, fast for several hours before the examination

Reason: gases and intestinal contents may reduce the diagnostic value of the image.

X-ray I.V. urography

  • Fasting for at least 6 hours
  • Light diet the day before
  • If necessary, an emptied bowel is recommended
  • It is mandatory to emphasize:
    • contrast allergy
    • kidney disease
    • diabetes

X-ray iridography

  • Mandatory bowel preparation the day before
  • The patient receives special written instructions when booking
  • It is recommended to plan a day off

X-ray of the stomach and intestinal transit

  • Strictly fasting
  • Do not smoke, do not chew gum
  • Take therapy only if agreed with the doctor

X-ray of the esophagus / swallowing act

  • Fasting for at least 4–6 hours
  • Avoid fluid intake immediately before the examination

X-ray phlebography

  • Fasting according to instructions
  • It is mandatory to emphasize allergies and kidney disease
  • Short rest is recommended after the examination

RADIATION DOSE AND SAFETY

  • All X-ray examinations at Drinković Polyclinic are performed using the lowest possible radiation dose, in accordance with the ALARA principle
  • Each examination is indicated individually and justified
  • Special attention is given to children and younger persons
