Pregnancy ultrasound in a twin pregnancy is a key diagnostic method for monitoring fetal development, assessing the placenta, and timely recognizing possible complications. A twin pregnancy requires more frequent and detailed ultrasound check-ups compared to a singleton pregnancy.

What is assessed by ultrasound in a twin pregnancy

An ultrasound examination assesses:
the number of fetuses, viability and cardiac activity of both fetuses, chorionicity and amnionicity (one or two placentas, one or two amniotic sacs), growth and biometry of each fetus separately, the amount of amniotic fluid, fetal position, the appearance and position of the placenta, and anatomical structures according to gestational age.

Why early assessment of chorionicity is important

Determining chorionicity at an early stage of pregnancy (most often in the first trimester) is crucial because it significantly affects further pregnancy monitoring.

Monochorionic twin pregnancies carry a higher risk of complications and require increased surveillance.

Most common indications for more frequent ultrasound check-ups

A twin pregnancy in itself is an indication for more frequent ultrasound examinations. Special attention is needed in cases of:
differences in fetal growth, suspected selective intrauterine growth restriction, disorders in the amount of amniotic fluid, monochorionic pregnancy, suspected twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), previous complications in pregnancy.

Limitations of the examination

Although ultrasound provides extremely valuable information, certain complications may develop between check-ups; therefore, findings are always interpreted in the context of the clinical picture and the gynecologist’s recommendations.

Preparation for the examination

No special preparation is required. It is recommended to bring previous medical documentation and earlier ultrasound findings if available.
