HPV vaccination

Vaccination against HPV (human papillomavirus) represents the most effective preventive measure in preventing infections with high-risk types of HPV associated with the development of cervical cancer, as well as other malignant and benign diseases.

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted viruses, and most sexually active people become infected with at least one type of HPV during their lifetime.

What is HPV and why is it dangerous?

Human papillomavirus includes more than 200 types of viruses.

Some types cause genital warts, while high-risk types (e.g. 16 and 18) are associated with the development of:

• cervical cancer,
• vaginal and vulvar cancer,
• anal cancer,
• penile cancer, and
• oral cavity and throat cancer.

The infection is often asymptomatic, but it can lead to long-term consequences.

Who should get vaccinated against HPV?

Vaccination is recommended for:

• girls and boys before becoming sexually active,
• adolescents and young adults,
• adults who have not been vaccinated previously,
• women and men regardless of previous HPV infection.

The vaccine does not treat an existing infection, but it protects against types of the virus with which the person has not yet come into contact.

When is the best time for vaccination?

The greatest effectiveness is achieved before the onset of sexual activity, but vaccination is also beneficial at an older age.
The age of administration and the number of doses depend on age and previous vaccination status.

How is vaccination carried out?

Vaccination is administered by intramuscular injection, most often in the upper arm.
The vaccination schedule includes two or three doses, depending on the age of the person at the time of vaccination.

Safety and side effects

HPV vaccines are safe and thoroughly tested.
The most common side effects are mild and temporary: pain at the injection site, redness, mild swelling, short-term fever, or fatigue.

Serious side effects are extremely rare.

Vaccination and preventive examinations

Vaccination does not replace regular gynecological examinations, Pap test, and HPV testing.
The best protection is provided by a combination of vaccination and regular screening.
