CTG monitoring

CTG monitoring (cardiotocography) is a non-invasive examination that simultaneously monitors the fetal heart rate and uterine activity. The examination is used in pregnancy monitoring, especially in the third trimester, to assess the fetal condition and promptly detect signs of fetal distress.

CTG monitoring is performed with the pregnant woman in a lying or semi-reclining position, without radiation and without risk to the mother or child.

What is assessed with CTG monitoring

Baseline fetal heart rate, heart rate variability, accelerations and decelerations, frequency and intensity of uterine contractions, and the relationship between fetal heart activity and contractions.

Most common indications for CTG monitoring

Routine pregnancy monitoring in the third trimester, reduced fetal movements, suspected fetal distress, post-term pregnancy, high-risk pregnancy, gestational diabetes, hypertension in pregnancy, monitoring after therapeutic interventions, and follow-up CTG as recommended by a gynecologist.

Advantages of CTG monitoring

A non-invasive and painless examination, no ionizing radiation, enables continuous monitoring of the fetal condition, can be repeated as needed, and provides quick information about fetal well-being.

Limitations of the examination

CTG monitoring provides a functional assessment at the time of recording; the finding is always interpreted in the context of the clinical picture, gestational age, and other findings (ultrasound, Doppler).

Preparation

No special preparation is required. It is recommended to bring previous medical documentation related to the pregnancy if available.
