What our patients say
Today I had a gastroscopy with Dr. Prim. V Supanc and I would like to thank both the doctor and the nurse who was with him today for their professionalism, kindness, and empathy, and who tried to comfort me and make me laugh because I was very afraid of that examination, and she succeeded. Findings normal Thanks once again to the whole team!

Preoperative breast marking – precise preparation for a surgical procedure

Preoperative breast marking is a targeted radiological procedure used to precisely mark a change in the breast before surgery, so that the surgeon can accurately remove the lesion while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

This procedure represents a key step in the modern treatment of breast disease, especially in the case of small, non-palpable changes.

What is preoperative marking?

Preoperative marking is a procedure in which a radiologist, with the help of an imaging method, places a marker (wire or marker) in or next to a breast lesion that cannot be felt, but is visible on imaging examinations.

The goal is to:

  • precisely locate the change
  • enable the surgeon to remove it safely and precisely
  • reduce the extent of surgery
  • increase the success of the procedure on the first attempt

When is preoperative marking performed?

Preoperative marking is performed when:

  • the lesion is visible on ultrasound, mammography, or MRI, but cannot be felt
  • surgical removal of the change is planned
  • there is suspicion of a malignant or premalignant change
  • a biopsy-confirmed change is being removed

It is most commonly used for:

  • early-stage breast cancer
  • intraductal lesions
  • atypical lesions

How is preoperative breast marking performed?

The procedure is performed on the day of surgery or the day before, on an outpatient basis, and takes a short time.

Marking can be:

  • ultrasound-guided preoperative marking
  • mammography-guided marking (stereotaxy)

The most common method:

  • placement of a thin metal wire (wire localization)
  • or a metal marker (depending on the indication and agreement with the surgeon)

Procedure:

  • performed under local anesthesia or without it
  • takes a few minutes
  • minimally uncomfortable
  • leaves no permanent consequences

Advantages of preoperative marking

  • high precision of the surgical procedure
  • smaller surgical incision
  • greater preservation of healthy breast tissue
  • reduced risk of repeat surgery
  • better aesthetic result

Is the procedure safe?
Yes. Preoperative marking is:

  • a routine procedure
  • very safe
  • with minimal risk of complications
  • a standard in modern breast surgery
