What our patients say
Today I had a gastroscopy with Dr. Prim. V Supanc and I would like to thank both the doctor and the nurse who was with him today for their professionalism, kindness, and empathy, and who tried to comfort me and make me laugh because I was very afraid of that examination, and she succeeded. Findings normal Thanks once again to the whole team!

Cytological puncture

Fine needle aspiration cytology
Fine needle aspiration cytology

Cytological puncture (FNA – fine needle aspiration) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure in which a sample of cells is taken with a thin needle from a suspicious lesion for cytological analysis.

It is a fast, safe, and reliable method that often provides an answer without the need for surgery.

What is cytological puncture?

Cytological puncture involves the aspiration of cells from a lesion using a thin needle, most often under imaging guidance.

The obtained sample is analyzed by a cytologist, who assesses the benign or malignant nature of the lesion.

When is cytological puncture performed?

Cytological puncture is recommended when an examination such as ultrasound, mammography, CT, or MRI reveals a lesion that needs further clarification.

Most common indications:

  • breast lesion
  • enlarged lymph nodes
  • thyroid changes
  • subcutaneous and soft tissue masses
  • cysts (diagnostic and therapeutic punctures)

How is cytological puncture performed?

Cytological puncture is most often performed under ultrasound guidance, ensuring high precision and safety of the procedure.

The procedure itself:

  • takes a few minutes
  • is performed on an outpatient basis
  • usually does not require local anesthesia
  • does not leave scars

Advantages of cytological puncture

  • minimally invasive method
  • fast results
  • high diagnostic value
  • no need for general anesthesia
  • quick return to everyday activities

Is cytological puncture painful?
The procedure is short and minimally uncomfortable; most patients describe it as a prick similar to having blood drawn.

When is cytological puncture not enough?
In certain cases, if the cytological finding is unclear or a more detailed histological analysis is needed, the doctor may recommend a CORE biopsy.

Why have cytological puncture done with us?

  • experienced radiologists
  • modern diagnostic equipment
  • high precision with imaging guidance
