This diagnostic method greatly improves the accuracy of the diagnostic procedure of prostate cancer biopsy because information from MRI images is combined with real-time ultrasound images to enable physicians to biopsy targeted zones directly from suspicious regions of the prostate visible on MRI images.

The difference between a classic biopsy and targeted MR/US fusion biopsy of the prostate?
Most prostate biopsies are still performed “blindly,” and in this procedure 12-15 biopsy samples are taken at random in an attempt to find cancer if it is present.
Whereas targeted MR/US fusion biopsy greatly improves the precision of sampling suspicious tissue, and the entire prostate is not biopsied, but only the targeted suspicious areas.
Biopsy remains the ultimate method for determining the presence of cancer and establishing the appropriate prognosis, based on the size and aggressiveness of the tumor.
