Magnetic resonance arthrography
Magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography is a specialized imaging method that provides a detailed insight into the condition of joints. Unlike standard magnetic resonance imaging, MR arthrography involves injecting a contrast agent into the joint, which enables better visualization of internal structures. This procedure is often used to diagnose damage to ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and other soft tissues within the joint.
The difference between MRI and MR arthrography
Standard magnetic resonance imaging uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures, such as bones, muscles, and soft tissues.
On the other hand, MR arthrography is specific to joints and involves the administration of a contrast agent to clearly show structures such as the labrum, meniscus, or cartilage. This increases the precision of diagnosing smaller injuries that may be missed on a standard MRI scan.
Who is a candidate for MR arthrography?
MR arthrography is recommended for patients who have pain or limited mobility in the joints and who have not been diagnosed using standard imaging methods. It is most commonly used to assess the condition of the shoulder, hip, knee, or wrist joints. Patients who have experienced joint trauma, suffer from chronic pain, or need an evaluation of their condition after surgery may be ideal candidates for this type of examination.
What does the examination look like and how long does it take?
The MR arthrography procedure itself takes about 30 to 60 minutes. First, a contrast agent is injected into the joint under ultrasound or X-ray guidance. After the contrast has been administered, the patient is moved into the MRI machine where the scan is performed. The procedure is non-invasive and generally painless.
Who should not undergo MR arthrography?
MR arthrography is not recommended for pregnant women, people with certain allergies to contrast agents, or patients with metal implants such as pacemakers or neurostimulators. It is always important to consult a doctor before deciding on the examination in order to ensure the patient’s safety.
Magnetic resonance arthrography is a very effective diagnostic tool for assessing the condition of joints and provides information that can be crucial for further treatment.
