Who is the examination intended for?

Bone CT is recommended for patients who have:

• pain in the joints that does not go away (knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow)
• degenerative changes and osteoarthritis
• chronic or acute inflammation of the bones and joints
• deformities or congenital bone anomalies
• the need for preparation before an orthopedic procedure or implant
• a sports injury or trauma of the musculoskeletal system

This method provides data that a standard X-ray often cannot show clearly enough.

What does the examination look like?

The examination is performed while the patient lies still on the CT scanner table. Depending on the indication, a specific part of the body is scanned – for example, CT of the knee, CT of the hip, CT of the foot, or CT of the shoulder. In most cases, no contrast agent is needed, unless inflammation or a tumor change is suspected. The examination itself is painless and takes only a few minutes.

How long does a bone CT take?

Imaging of a bone segment takes a few minutes, and with preparation and positioning, a total of about 20 minutes. If a contrast agent is used, the examination may take slightly longer.
