Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Calculator
The calculator is used for an approximate assessment of breast cancer risk according to the Gail model.
This model uses a woman’s personal medical and reproductive history to assess the risk of developing invasive breast cancer over a specific period of time, including: age, age at menarche, the woman’s age at the birth of her first child, a positive family history of breast cancer in first-degree relatives (mother, sisters, daughters), number of previous breast biopsies (whether positive or negative), presence of atypical hyperplasia.
The model uses a woman’s personal medical and reproductive history and family history of breast cancer (mother, sisters, daughters) to estimate the absolute risk of breast cancer, i.e. the chance or probability of developing invasive breast cancer within a defined age interval.
The calculator cannot accurately assess breast cancer risk for:
– Women who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.
– Women with a previous history of invasive or in situ breast cancer (lobular carcinoma in situ or ductal carcinoma in situ)
Although a woman’s risk can be accurately estimated, these predictions do not allow an accurate determination of which woman will develop breast cancer. Some women who do not develop breast cancer have higher risk estimates than some women who do develop breast cancer.
