Ultrasound of the hand

Ultrasound (US) of the hand is a non-invasive diagnostic examination that enables a detailed analysis of the flexor and extensor tendons of the fingers, tendon sheaths, small joints of the hand, synovium, and soft tissues. The examination is performed in real time and enables dynamic assessment during active and passive finger movements, which is particularly important in the diagnosis of functional disorders.

What is assessed with hand ultrasound?

The flexor and extensor tendons of the fingers, tendon sheaths, metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and interphalangeal (IP) joints, synovial proliferation, joint effusions, ganglion and other cystic lesions, soft tissue masses, and post-traumatic changes.

Most common indications for hand US

Pain and swelling of the fingers or hand, suspected tenosynovitis, trigger finger, De Quervain syndrome, rheumatic and other inflammatory conditions of the joints, sports and post-traumatic injuries, follow-up after surgical procedures or local therapies (injections).

Advantages of hand US examination

High sensitivity for soft tissue changes, the possibility of dynamic examination, comparison with the contralateral side, absence of ionizing radiation, and the possibility of repeating the examination without risk to the patient.

Limitations of the examination

Bone structures are not shown in detail by ultrasound; if a fracture is suspected, an X-ray examination is indicated, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is recommended for complex intra-articular and deep lesions.
