Wrist ultrasound

Ultrasound (US) of the wrist joint is a non-invasive diagnostic examination that enables a detailed assessment of joint structures, ligaments, tendons, synovium, and peripheral nerves, with the possibility of a dynamic real-time examination and color Doppler analysis according to the clinical indication.

What is assessed with wrist ultrasound

The radiocarpal and midcarpal joint, flexor and extensor tendons in the wrist area, ligaments, synovial changes and joint effusions, ganglions, nerve structures – especially the median nerve in the carpal tunnel – as well as the surrounding soft tissues.

Most common indications for wrist US

Pain in the wrist area, swelling, reduced or painful mobility, suspected carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglion, tendinitis and tenosynovitis, post-traumatic conditions, inflammatory and degenerative joint changes.

Advantages of wrist US examination

Dynamic assessment during movement, high diagnostic value for soft tissue changes, rapid availability of the examination, absence of ionizing radiation, and the possibility of repeating the examination.

Limitations of the examination

Ultrasound does not fully show bony morphology and deep intra-articular structures; according to the clinical indication, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the wrist joint is recommended.
