Achilles Tendon Ultrasound

Achilles tendon ultrasound at Drinković Polyclinic is a fast, precise, and non-invasive ultrasound examination used to assess the structure, continuity, and vascularization of the Achilles tendon. The examination is the method of choice for diagnosing tendinopathy, partial and complete ruptures, inflammatory changes, bursitis, as well as postoperative conditions.

When is an Achilles tendon ultrasound performed?

The examination is recommended in cases of: pain in the heel area and the back of the lower leg, swelling or thickening of the tendon, pain after sports activities, sudden pain with suspected rupture, chronic complaints (jumper’s knee/heel), follow-up after injury or surgery.

What is assessed during the examination?

The thickness and echogenicity of the tendon, fiber continuity, the presence of microruptures or ruptures, peritendinous fluid, retrocalcaneal and subcutaneous bursitis and, if necessary, vascularization with Color Doppler (signs of active inflammation) are assessed.

What does the examination look like?

The examination is painless, without radiation and without contrast, and takes about 10–15 minutes. It is performed in a lying position, often with dynamic assessment (foot movements) for better differentiation of lesions. The findings are available immediately.
