MRCP
MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography)
What is MRCP?
MRCP (magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography) is a non-invasive MRI method that provides a very detailed view of the biliary and pancreatic system. MRCP enables the clearest and most detailed visualization of these structures compared to other imaging methods, without the use of ionizing radiation and without invasive procedures.
When is MRCP used?
MRCP is used in the diagnosis and assessment of:
- suspected stones in the bile ducts (choledocholithiasis)
- disorders of the patency of the common bile duct
- diseases of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts
- diseases of the pancreas
- inflammatory and infectious changes in the biliary and pancreatic system
- tumors of the bile ducts, liver, or pancreas
- unclear obstructions of the bile or pancreatic ducts
- elevated liver enzymes of unclear cause
- pain in the upper abdomen with suspected biliary pathology
MRCP makes it possible to detect the cause of obstruction of the biliary and pancreatic system and helps plan further treatment or interventional procedures.
How to prepare for MRCP?
- you need to arrive for the examination on an empty stomach (at least 4–6 hours before the examination)
- it is recommended not to drink liquids for several hours before the examination, unless you have been advised otherwise
- you may take your regular therapy according to the agreement with your doctor
- before the examination, it is necessary to remove all metal objects (jewelry, watch, cards)
- it is important to inform the staff if you have implants, a pacemaker, metal prostheses, or severe claustrophobia
The examination is performed without the use of contrast agent in most cases.
Is MRCP painful?
No. MRCP is a painless and non-invasive examination.
Does MRCP use radiation?
No. MRCP is performed using magnetic resonance imaging and does not use ionizing radiation.
When is MRCP not sufficient?
If a therapeutic intervention is needed (e.g. stone removal), the doctor may recommend ERCP, which is an invasive but therapeutic method.
When do I receive the MRCP findings?
The findings are interpreted by a specialist radiologist and are usually available the same day or as agreed.
