Hip MRI (magnetic resonance imaging of the hips)
What is a hip MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the hips is a diagnostic method that provides a very detailed view of the bony and soft-tissue structures of the hip, including the articular cartilage, labrum, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bone marrow.
Hip MRI enables a more precise assessment of soft tissues compared to X-ray and CT, without the use of ionizing radiation.
When is a hip MRI used?
Hip MRI is used for diagnosing and assessing:
- degenerative changes of the hip (coxarthrosis, arthritis)
- damage to the articular cartilage
- labral changes and lesions
- ligament and tendon injuries
- sports injuries (blows, strains, dislocations)
- work-related injuries and injuries caused by repetitive strain
- hip pain of unclear cause
- muscle ruptures
- bone edema and stress fractures
- infections (e.g. osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
- bone and soft-tissue tumors and metastases
- swelling or bleeding in the joint and surrounding tissues
What should I expect during a hip MRI scan?
The scan is performed in a lying position and lasts 20–30 minutes, depending on the protocol. During the scan, it is necessary to lie still in order to obtain high-quality images.
The scan is painless, but the device produces louder sounds, which is why headphones or earplugs are used.
How should I prepare for a hip MRI?
- special preparation is generally not required
- you may eat and drink as usual, unless otherwise stated
- before the scan, it is necessary to remove metal objects (watch, jewelry, cards)
- it is important to inform the staff if you have implants, a pacemaker, metal prostheses, or claustrophobia
Do I need a referral for a hip MRI?
A hip MRI at Drinković Polyclinic can be done without a referral.
Is radiation used during a hip MRI?
No. Magnetic resonance imaging does not use ionizing radiation.
Can I have a hip MRI if I have metal in my body?
Before the scan, it is important to inform the staff about any implants, prostheses, or medical devices so that the safety of the scan can be assessed.
The report is interpreted by a specialist radiologist and is generally available the same day or as agreed.
