What does the examination look like?

The examination is performed on a CT device with the use of a contrast agent administered intravenously. The contrast agent enables clearer imaging of the blood vessels of the lungs. The patient lies on their back, and the CT table moves through the scanner opening. It is important that during the examination the patient lies still and, according to the staff’s instructions, holds their breath for a few seconds in order to obtain the highest-quality image possible.

CT pulmonary angiography is a painless and non-invasive examination. The only discomfort may be a feeling of warmth when the contrast agent is administered, which is a normal and temporary occurrence.

How long does the examination take?

The examination itself is very short – most often 10 to 20 minutes, including preparation and administration of the contrast agent. After the examination, the patient can continue with their everyday activities, unless the doctor recommends otherwise.
