Lung cancer screening

Who should undergo lung screening?

Screening is recommended for adults who do not have symptoms but have a high risk of developing the disease. According to the guidelines of the Croatian Thoracic Society and the Section for Thoracic Radiology of the Croatian Society, screening should be done by people who are at high risk, namely:

1) people aged 50-75 who are active smokers or who quit smoking within 15 years before screening, with a smoking history of at least 30 years (30 pack-years)

Guidelines from other international societies also recommend:

1) examination for smokers who currently smoke and have not quit smoking in the last 15 years

2) examination for people who were active smokers

3) people who have other risks for developing lung cancer (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – COPD, people who have a family history of lung cancer, and people who have been exposed to asbestosis.

What can you expect during a CT scan?
The radiologic technologist will position you on the CT table, and during the scan you must remain still. The table will move during scanning to determine the correct initial scanning position. Depending on the type of CT scan, the machine may make multiple movements.
