Computed tomography (MSCT) of the sinuses is a precise and modern radiological method that enables a detailed view of the sinuses. At Drinković Polyclinic in Zagreb, we use high-resolution CT equipment to detect changes, inflammations (sinusitis), tumor processes, or other pathological abnormalities in the sinuses.

Who is this examination intended for?

The examination is indicated for patients who have:

• frequent or chronic sinus inflammations (sinusitis)
• difficulty breathing through the nose, frequent congestion
• pain in the facial area
• deformities of the nasal structure
• suspicion of polyps, tumors, or unusual mucosal changes
• planned nose or sinus surgery
• symptoms that do not respond to medical therapy

This method enables the detection of mucosal thickening, sinus opacification, and visibility of bone structures and possible lesions.

How to prepare and what to expect during the examination

• Before the examination, it is important to inform the radiologists about allergies, especially to contrast agents, as well as about kidney function.
• If contrast is used, a short abstinence from food and drink before the examination may be required.
• Clothing should be comfortable, without metal accessories (jewelry, hairpins, dentures) that may interfere with the images.
• During imaging, the patient lies down, usually on their back, with the head kept still; they may be asked to hold their breath for a few seconds to obtain better image quality.

Duration of the examination

CT imaging of the sinuses is very short — a few minutes (usually between 5 and 10 minutes) if performed without contrast. With preparation and possible placement of a contrast infusion, the entire procedure may take up to 15–20 minutes.

After imaging, the patient can immediately continue with daily activities, unless the doctor recommends otherwise.
