MSCT (CT) of the spine (computed tomography of the spine) is an advanced radiological method that enables a detailed view of the bony and surrounding structures of the spinal column. This examination provides highly precise images of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, allowing doctors to make a quick and accurate diagnosis.

When is a CT scan of the spine recommended?

MSCT (CT) of the spine is most commonly used for diagnosing:

• back or neck pain of unknown cause
• suspected disc herniation or degenerative changes
• fractures and vertebral injuries after trauma
• tumors, metastases, or infections of the spine
• narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis)
• evaluation after surgical procedures

For certain indications, a CT scan of the spine may be combined with contrast for a better assessment of soft tissues and neural structures.

Patient preparation

For a standard MSCT (CT) of the spine, preparation is usually not necessary. If contrast medium is used, it is recommended not to consume food or drink for several hours before the examination and to inform the doctor about possible allergies or kidney diseases.

What does the examination look like?

The examination is painless and takes a very short time. The patient lies on the CT scanner table while the selected parts of the spine are being imaged. The scan takes only a few minutes, and the entire procedure with preparation usually lasts up to 20 minutes.

The findings are analyzed by an experienced radiologist, and the results are provided as quickly as possible.
